Do you think you could roast a steak in the dishwasher?
Many people do, as the equipment most often associated with cleaning plates and glasses is now being used for cooking.
Putting steak, salmon, or any other protein in an airtight bag and putting it in the dishwasher is a variant on the French sous vide method of cooking, which includes cooking food in a vacuum-sealed bag.
Chef Michelle Doll demonstrated how it’s done for Inside Edition.
“It’s not going to get any water in it because it’s in these waterproof bags,” Doll explained, “so it’ll only cook in its own juices and really concentrate the flavor.”
“It gets so heated for such a lengthy period of time,” Doll explained further. Most dishwasher cycles run an hour and a half to two hours, and if we cook the steak at that temperature for that long, we’ll get the most flawlessly cooked steak!”
In fact, you can use the dishwasher to prepare your entire supper.
“Carrots, apple compote, grilled shrimp, potatoes, asparagus… and steak!” Doll remarked.
Les Trent, a senior correspondent for Inside Edition, tried a bite of the food.
What’s his perspective on it? “This is fantastic!” he exclaimed.
You can use a Ziplock bag if you don’t have a vacuum sealer and want to try this way of cooking. For additional information on what to do next, see the video above.
