Michelle Hui, an expectant mother, was heartbroken when she miscarried six weeks into her pregnancy.
After five scans confirmed her loss, she underwent the traumatic experience of swallowing an abortion pill to ensure that no infection was left behind.
Michelle, 31, was being prepped for her final treatment to clean her uterus when a preparatory scan detected a little heartbeat a few days later.
Doctors were astounded to learn she was expecting twins, one of whom had miraculously survived both the miscarriage and the abortion.
Michelle, who was already a mother of two, gave birth to Megan, a beautiful baby girl who is now 18 weeks old.
She and her 33-year-old salesman husband Ross are overjoyed.
She described the miscarriage and abortion as “extremely awful.”
“The ten days between my loss and returning to the hospital were a fog.”
“I was heartbroken to learn that I would have to undergo another operation.
“But then I noticed this tiny heartbeat, and I knew it wasn’t right.” I didn’t want to get my hopes up after everything we’d been through.
“The doctor left and returned with a more senior doctor, who repeated the scan and exclaimed, ‘You are not going to believe it, we’ve got a heartbeat.’ It was the most wonderful sensation imaginable.
“Now Megan is wonderful, she’s healthy, and she’s just a huge healthy pudding of a baby,” says her mother. It was a blessing, according to the doctors. It’s the first time they’ve ever heard of anything like it. Someone had been keeping an eye on us.”
Michelle, a bank employee, was six weeks and two days into her pregnancy when she miscarried last July while walking to the train station.
“At first, everything was fine,” she remarked. “I had scheduled my scan and had an appointment for the following day.”
“I was driving to work when I started gushing blood.” I called my husband and informed him I was having a miscarriage. I had to walk home since he couldn’t come collect me because he had the other two kids.”
She then proceeded to the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, where she alleges two physicians performed a total of five scans before confirming she had miscarried her baby.
She was given two abortion pills and sent home following an overnight stay in the hospital.
“After I lost the baby, I went out with friends and drank a bottle and a half of wine,” she explained. I was heartbroken — and drank myself crazy as a result. That’s the most I’ve ever drank in my life. “I’m not an alcoholic.”
Despite physicians’ assurances that she was not pregnant, she was advised to undergo a pregnancy test to see whether any hazardous clots had survived.
Because the test came back positive, she returned to the hospital for a D&C (dilation and curettage), which is a surgical operation that removes the contents of the uterus. However, doctors noticed a heartbeat on a scan at that point. Michelle said, “I couldn’t believe it.” “Neither could the physicians,” she added. But, as thrilled as I was, I was irritated that she had been missed in the tests.
“They stated the blood and clots must have cast shadows, making it impossible for them to see her.”
“They said I was fortunate.
“I’ve been featured in medical papers, and the doctor stated that in his 25 years of practice, he has never seen or heard anything like this.”
Megan, a little sister to Mya, four, and Noah, two, was born on February 25th, weighing just under six pounds.
Michelle, from County Kildare, Ireland, adding, “She’s our little miracle.” “We’ve always been a strong family, but it’s only strengthened us.” If it hadn’t been for my spouse and two children, I wouldn’t have been able to get through it all.
“It was a really trying period, but we now have a beautiful and healthy young girl.”
The Association of Radical Midwives stated that it has never heard of a situation like this before.
“It certainly is an unbelievable story,” spokeswoman Katherine Hales, a 20-year midwife, said.
“On rare occasions, I’ve heard of a miscarriage of one kid followed by the birth of another.”

“However, I’ve never heard of anything like this happening after taking (abortion pill) mifepristone.” It’s just luck — I can’t conceive of a medical reason for it to happen. The twins should be of the same height and weight. You’d think the second one was the same size as the first, and they’d notice it on the scan.
“I presume because they couldn’t detect the second, there was a difference in gestation between the two – but hormonally, that shouldn’t happen, and even if it did, you’re talking hours, not days.”
“It’s a truly extraordinary example, and I’m curious to see if there’s another one out there.”
“I like it.”
Rotunda Hospital’s spokesman declined to comment.
