A grandmother in Alabama, USA, said she just wanted to teach her granddaughter a lesson, but what happened then left a family in tears.
This case has been on the front pages of online publications all over the world, and the tragic conclusion does not seem to be fair at all.
It all started when Savannah, a 9-year-old girl, took, without her grandmother’s knowledge, some candy from a bowl in the house. When her grandmother, Joyce, 49, noticed that candy was missing, Savannah lied that she took it and told her story, for fear of her grandmother, who everyone knows is extremely harsh and terrorizes her family.
To teach her a lesson about lying, angry, Joyce sent the little girl out in the middle of the afternoon, when it was very hot, to gather some sticks in the yard. When she filled her arms with sticks, her grandmother told her to start running. She didn’t let her stop running, ordering her to continue.
Savannah ran for 3 hours until she had a seizure and fell to the ground, her body convulsing. She went into a coma for 3 hours and then died.
A neighbor told the police that he witnessed the incident, but did not stop the little girl because she did not know the context of her run. The cause of the little girl’s death was “prolonged physical exertion”.
Joyce and her stepmother were arrested. Her stepmother was arrested for failing to stop the abuse and was considered an accomplice.
After a difficult trial, her grandmother was sentenced to life in prison, but she was imprisoned for only one year because she had a heart attack and died. Despite her demeanor, her family mourned her.
