James Spence, who was about to become a first-time father, was riding his motorcycle when he was involved in an accident that shattered his skull and caused him to suffer brain damage.
The 25-year-old patient was placed into an induced coma prior to the delivery of their son Carter by Charlene Pope in Bristol.
However, the mother of two children is convinced that the newborn baby’s trips to see his father were a significant factor in both his awakening and his complete recovery.
She explained, “I was scared that our baby wouldn’t get to meet his dad.” “However, I believe that bringing the infant around was beneficial to him coming around.”
On the same day that James was born, August 8, the 29-year-old woman brought their newborn boy to meet him. James was born on August 8.
And even more amazingly, James regained consciousness just ten days after the catastrophic crash that he had been in just two days later.
Charlene, who also has a daughter named Jaya who is nine years old, shared her thoughts as follows: “Because he had a slight case of amnesia for the first week or so, whenever he woke up from a nap or something else, we had a picture of Carter ready to show him and we had to remind him who Carter was.
“Because of how shaky he was on his feet at first, I wouldn’t recommend letting him hold Carter for an extended period of time.
Because his brain was telling him he wouldn’t be able to walk again, he would pace up and down the ward for hours at a time.
After spending their first Christmas together, Charlene refers to her partner as a “walking miracle.” This is after the two of them celebrated the holiday together for the first time.
“The story has a happy conclusion because he is now back at home, and all of us are taking pleasure in being a close-knit family.”
In order to make the most of the time they have left together, James and Charlene have decided to be married.
Charlene commented, “It has made us realize how life might be cut short in the blink of an eye, therefore we have scheduled our wedding and will be getting married in November 2018.”
Ben Walton, the adult clinical lead for serious trauma at North Bristol NHS Trust, is of the opinion that James’ family was an extremely important factor in his successful recovery.
“The moment a patient suffers a major injury and is admitted to our hospital, the rehabilitation process can begin.
“Maintaining frequent communication and contact with loved ones is an essential component of the recovery process.
“James’ miraculous recovery was not just due to the great care he received here at Southmead Hospital, but also due to the many visits and encouragement he received from his partner Charlene and their kid.”
