This patient arrived at the hospital with terrible abdominal pain and nausea, symptoms that normally indicate a classic and common appendicitis. Although ultrasound and urine analysis did not show exactly that it was the cause of the woman’s pain, doctors decided to operate on the woman as soon as possible because if she was appendicitis, it can be fatal in some cases.
The doctors chose to use a technique based on laparoscopy that works like this: with the help of a pair of pliers and a video camera that is both inserted into the patient’s abdomen, through a small incision.
The surgeon said: “When I cut the appendix at the base, a lot of worms came out of the organ. I quickly removed it and the worms that had escaped from the appendix were removed one by one. ”
Only during the operation did the doctors understand what the woman’s health problem was: intestinal worm infection, ascaris lumbricoides. It is a cylindrical, white-yellow, and semi-transparent worm that is usually 15-35 cm long, although females are larger than males.
