Jamie Spears, Britney Spears’ father, agreed on Thursday to relinquish his daughter’s guardian status, Variety was quoted as saying by News. His decision comes after years of lawsuits, but also of protests from the singer’s fans, who accused her of being under abusive control. In fact, recently, the singer testified about the treatment she receives, stating that she is “traumatized”.
The pop star’s father filed a lawsuit in front of the Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday regarding Britney Spears’ request to withdraw her position.
According to Jamie Spears’ lawyer, there was “no reason to remove him from this position,” but the public struggle in which his daughter was engaged led him to make the decision.
“It is very debatable whether a change of guardian at this time would be in Mrs. Spears’ interest. Even if Mr. Spears is unjustifiably attacked, he does not believe that a public fight over guardianship with his daughter is in her best interests. He will work with the Court and his daughter’s lawyer to prepare for a smooth transition in guardianship, “the lawyer said.
Britney Spears’ lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, welcomed the announced decision in a statement.
“We are happy that Mr. Spears and his lawyer have admitted today in a legal document that they must retire. Justice has been done for Britney, “he said.
The lawyer also promised to “continue the investigation into the behavior of Mr. Spears and others over the past 13 years, during which time he raised millions of dollars from his daughter.”
Britney Spears urged judges to end “abusive” guardianship
Britney Spears, 39, was placed under her father’s care in 2008 after signs of mental health problems. A year earlier, the singer divorced Kevin Federline, lost custody of her children, and was hospitalized in a recovery center, following an alleged nervous breakdown.
In 2020, the singer went to court to be removed from the custody of her father. In June, she testified in court, claiming that she was forced to work against her will and was forced to wear a contraceptive device.
Britney Spears said she wants her therapy appointments reduced, she wants to be able to get married and have a baby, which is not possible right now.
Britney Spears:
“I deserve to have a life, I’ve worked all my life. I deserve a break of two, three years. This guardianship does me much more harm than good.”
The accusations were denied by the artist’s father, aged 68, who repeatedly stated that he only thinks about his daughter’s health. In her fight to get out of custody, Britney Spears had the support of her fans, who launched protests under the name “Free Britney”.
Messages of support also came from other American artists, including Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears’ ex-boyfriend.
