Officer Drew Canaday owns Ozzie, a Czechoslovakian shepherd dog of a special German shepherd line.
While he isn’t a police K9, he has had extensive training to protect his home and is a top-notch excellent boy. He’s also been dubbed a “hero” as of Wednesday.
On Wednesday afternoon, Canaday, who works for the Ferguson Police Department in Missouri, was off the clock and resting when he was startled awake by a terrifying sound.
Canaday told KMOV, “I mean, the worst scream I ever heard.” “It was a gut-wrenching scream.”
He said, “And I take my robe, since I was in my underpants, and I ran out the door.” He, too, took out his revolver, unsure of what he would discover.
When he went outside, he noticed Katherine Rose, his next-door neighbor, being mauled by another neighbor’s dog in her own yard. Reggie was hitting the dog with a broom, but it didn’t seem to bother him.
Canaday went back to his house since he didn’t want to shoot at the dog because it would endanger Rose and Reggie.
Canaday remembered, “I came back to my front door and shouted, ‘Ozzie grab him,’ and he knew exactly what to do.” “He rushed right for that dog and smacked it in the face with his fist, causing the dog to let go of her arm.”
Poncho, the dog, fought Ozzie for around 20 minutes. Poncho’s owners tried to take him away at one point, but he was still seeing red and turned on them, biting one and causing major harm.
Canaday reported that when Poncho first let go of Ozzie, he turned around and seized his own owner, biting him in the calf. “This dog is really vicious, and I’m not sure why the door was left open… for him to go out.”
Almost everyone engaged required medical attention once the dust had settled. Canaday hurriedly dressed and raced his loyal dog to the veterinary clinic for treatment.
In a Facebook post, Canaday said, “He was bleeding profusely from his front left paw.” “The veterinarian at Ferguson Animal Hospital saw him right away and got to work. Ozzie had a major artery in his paw punctured. He was stitched up, wrapped up, given medication, and sent home to rest with his pleased Daddy.”
Rose was sent to the hospital with a mutilated finger and is awaiting surgery.
She remarked, “I’m trying to stay strong, but it’s very difficult.” “My finger has been eaten up to the point that it is deep down, close to the bone, and I need to see a surgeon.”
“I’m still alive. Thank God for Drew, the cop who stayed next door to me with his dog. My life was spared by his dog.”
Poncho’s owners had to travel to the hospital as well, and they stated that Poncho had been put down as a result of the incident. The owner, who did not want to be photographed, thanked Canaday and Ozzie for their help.
Canaday, on the other hand, is ecstatic about the canine hero.
He declared, “I’m a really proud poppa.”
On Facebook, he wrote, “Ozzie, your Daddy loves you and is sooo proud of you!”
“You’ve saved my life! Let’s watch the news credit an off-duty cop in his underwear and his dog for saving lives like it’s nothing.”
