The following are some of the most amazing facts about angels that we have discovered.
1. They are real.
The very fact that they exist should be enough to astound you. There are several television programmes dedicated to the quest for ghosts (spirits without bodies), yet Catholics believe that Angels (pure spirits) exist.
Is it, nevertheless, rational to believe in angels?
“Below us are clever animals, such as primates, less intelligent animals, such as fish, barely intelligent animals, such as slugs and television producers, plants, and minerals.” The Creator’s strategy appears to be fullness rather than emptiness… There would be a huge chasm between us and God if angels didn’t exist.” Angels (and Demons): An Introduction, by Dr. Peter Kreeft What exactly do we know about them?
In other words, just as there are creatures that grow in complexity from a single-celled organism to humans, there are creatures that grow in complexity from people to God.
You can prove the presence of angels if you can prove God’s existence. Angels exist, according to St. Thomas Aquinas.
2. God put the Angels to the test right after they were created.
We don’t know exactly what this test entailed, but theologians agree that they were given knowledge of the Incarnation and that they would be expected to adore Jesus. The majority of angels agreed with God’s plan, but Lucifer (meaning “light-bearer”) refused to worship anything with human characteristics. Furthermore, it was revealed that the Incarnation would take place through a woman, and that woman would be revered as “Queen of Angels” from that point forward. When Lucifer realized this, he cursed God and declared, “I will not serve.”
3. Angels Have Been Lied to You by Hollywood
Hollywood is well-known for spreading false information about angels. Angels are frequently depicted as little, feminine, and winged. They are sometimes represented as naked babies.
Remember that adorable little boy from It’s a Wonderful Life?
“Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings,” adds the teacher.
Angels are spiritual beings who have no physical form. As a result, they lack a body to which their wings could be attached.
What do they look like in real life? Nothing. We cannot see them because they are pure spirits. However, God has the option of allowing us to view them. They can take the form of a human or a winged creature, but they are almost always terrifying to see.
Another Hollywood misconception about angels is that when individuals die, they transform into angels.
Angels are angels and have always been angels. No one has ever achieved the status of an angel.
Although, explaining this to a bereaved person who has just posted a Facebook status that begins, “Heaven just acquired another angel…” is generally deemed “in poor taste.”
4. Quantum leaps are how angels move.
Well, kind of…
Read this if you really want to understand quantum jumps. A quantum leap occurs when something jumps from point A to point Z without going via points B, C, D, and so on. An angel can travel from one location to another without stopping in between. I’m forced to pass through interesting communities like Windom and Lake Crystal on my way from Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Minneapolis, Minnesota. An angel, on the other hand, might travel from Sioux Falls to Minneapolis without stopping in any of the minor towns along Highway 60.
Here’s where it becomes even more perplexing: This is a faulty way of looking at the situation. Angels do not have substance, hence they do not move in the traditional sense. They are spiritual beings who are not bound by the laws of physics as we are. When God wills, they can and do emerge in our world, and they may appear as if they are.
Confused? I’m in the same boat. Let’s get this party started.
5. Angels Have a Taxonomy of Their Own
Remember how they made you memorize King Phillip Climbs Over Fences Gathering Sticks in order for you to remember the classification system for living organisms in school?
Angels, too, have their own classification system. They are divided into nine choirs and three hierarchies. There are three choirs in each hierarchy. The nine choirs have great names, but the hierarchies don’t.
The Initial Hierarchy
1. The Seraphim.
Cherubims, number two
3. Game of Thrones
The Second Rank
4. Territories
5. Characteristics
6. Possibilities
The Third Rank
Principalities (nine)
Archangels (nine)
Angels (nine)
There could be more subgroups within these categories, but we haven’t been told about them.
6. Each angel is the sole representative of his species.
βSt. Thomas Aquinas said it, and you cannot argue with Aquinas,β is the easiest manner of stating and proving this.
“There is no such thing as “first” and “second” [prius et posterius] in things of one species,” the Philosopher explains (Metaph. iii, text 2). According to Dionysius, even among angels of the same order, there are first, middle, and last (Hier. Ang. x). As a result, the angels do not belong to the same species… For things that are similar in species but different in quantity, similar in form but different in material. As a result, if angels are not made out of matter and form, as stated above (Article 2), it is impossible for two angels to be of the same species…” P1, Q50, A4 β Summa Theologica
7. You’re Protected by an Angel
What evidence do we have for this? So said Jesus (Matthew 18:10).
We were given an angel by the Creator of the Universe so that we would never be alone. Our angels are responsible for protecting, guiding, and leading us to Heaven. It’s as if you have your own personal Batman following you about for safety and to warn you about things you shouldn’t do.
Guardian Angels aren’t re-usable.
God, the Infinite Creature, made a being particularly for you. Your guardian angel was designed to assist you in reaching Heaven.
When was the last time you had a conversation with your angel?
9. You Can’t Give Your Guardian Angel a Name
“Name-giving to Holy Angels should be prohibited, except in the circumstances of Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael, whose names are recorded in Holy Scripture.” β Popular Piety and the Liturgy Directory, 217
To name anything implies that you have authority or control over it. Angels aren’t the same as pets or kids. We don’t have authority over our guardian angels.
In prayer, could your guardian angel reveal his name to you? Yes, however, a demon could try to deceive you by giving your angel a name that isn’t your angel’s name.
10. Your Guardian Angel knows and loves you more than anybody else.
Except for God, that is.
