Katie Stricker Curtis felt wearing her new Chewbacca mask during giving birth would be amusing. It was also a hit with the hospital workers.
When Katie Stricker Curtis, 32, gave birth to her first child, a girl named Jayden Lee, on January 3rd, the force was definitely with her. During childbirth, a medical assistant from Windsor, Ontario, decided to wear a Star Wars Chewbacca mask, which had the staff at Windsor Regional Hospital in stitches.
On January 2nd, she posted a ten-second video of herself in labor while wearing the Chewy mask to her Facebook page, which has now received over 216,000 views.
This isn’t the first time a Chewbacca mask has hit the news for the wrong reasons. Another video of a lady wearing a Chewbacca mask went viral earlier this year. Candace Payne, aka “Chewbacca Mom,” filmed herself joyously giggling in her car as she tried on the new Chewbacca mask she had just purchased at Kohl’s.
“Over the summer, I saw the original Chewbacca video and thought it was hilarious!” remarked Curtis. “I kept watching that and laughing and laughing!”
Curtis was anxiously trying to induce labor while she was nearing the conclusion of her pregnancy. “My brother bought me the mask as a prank for Christmas, expecting I’d laugh myself into labor.” So I figured it’d be amusing if I wore the mask for a portion of my labor.”
Curtis stuck to her plan even when she was in labor. She remembered the comical mask and put it on in the third hour of labor. Scott Curtis, 40, recorded the short video and forwarded it to his wife’s brother, in which Curtis’ actual moans were transformed into “Chewbacca noises.” The siblings thought it was amusing, and the labor and delivery personnel concurred. She exclaimed, “My doctor and all the nurses thought it was extremely amusing!”
Curtis explained that the video was originally intended for her brother and that she hadn’t given it much attention until they decided to post it on Facebook. “One of my friends asked if she could make it public so she could share it with her pals, and that’s when it took off!” she exclaimed. Her friends and family were unsurprised that she would do anything like this because she is “always a goofball” and “the class clown,” she explained.
She said, “I pray I never lose my sense of humor.” “It’s one of my strongest assets.”
Any critics, she believes, are simply taking her jest too literally.
“I try not to read the comments because there are always people out there who have no personality or sense of humor and only have terrible things to say,” she explained. Curtis claims she was not attempting to plagiarize the original “Chewbacca Mom” video in order to get internet popularity.
“Don’t you think I would have done more than a 10-second phone video if I was trying to duplicate someone?” Seriously. Also, no one will ever be able to top the original Chewbacca Mom! That video was truly incredible! Her laughter was infectious!”
One thing is certain: with this hilarious mother on his side, baby Jayden will never know the dark side.
