Ethan Katicic, from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, has always wanted to be a fireman. The 18-year-old recently had a taste of what it’s like to save lives!
It all started when Ethan’s two 17-year-old friends were on their way to a nearby basketball court. They raised their eyes to see smoke billowing from the Citadel Mews West Retirement Home.
Ryken Glew and Jackson Brown came to a complete halt in their tracks, but instead of gawking at the oncoming calamity, they pulled over and went to the retirement home to see if they could assist.
“We thought the elderly would have a hard time getting out,” Jackson said.
The brave teenagers first went to the staff personnel gathering at the front door, and when they discovered that there were still people inside, they didn’t hesitate to follow them in. They dashed up to the fourth story, disregarding their own safety, and began systematically emptying the rooms.
“I rapped on the door and said, ‘There’s a fire, there’s a fire, everyone needs to get out,'” Jackson recalled. “After that, we opened the door and looked inside to make sure no one was inside before moving on to the next door.”
The passageways began to fill with smoke, and the roof was soon engulfed in flames. They would occasionally open a door to find a room on fire, but they were too preoccupied with evacuating everyone to be scared.
They merely wanted to get people out “as peacefully as possible” and knock on every door, according to Ryken. He said, “We did our best and that’s all we could do.” “The only thing that was running through my head was what if I missed someone and they were stranded in the building,” Jackson continued.
Ethan arrived shortly after his buddies, and he, too, dashed into the burning structure to assist. When he decided to enter, he had no idea his friends were there!
Ethan focussed on gathering the pets that had been left behind as many residents had already been gone. He took up a woman who was struggling to make her way outside and carried her in his arms.
He explained, “A little old lady needed some help down the stairs.” “I assisted her by carrying her down the stairwell. That was a major turning point in my life. Then I basically stayed the most of the time, making sure that everyone kept their distance and that the firefighters took care of the rest.”
Ethan added that after this experience, he is more certain than ever that he wants to be a fireman. Whether or whether they go into lifesaving, we think all of these young guys are heroes!
Richard Belley is one of the many people who are eternally grateful to the teenagers for their bravery. He received a call that day informing him that his father’s retirement home was on fire. His father, who lives on the fourth floor, was alarmed when he arrived on the scene and saw the building’s top was entirely flames. His father, however, had already been rescued thanks to Ryken, Jackson, and Ethan.
“They’re three angels in my opinion,” Richard stated. “They’re well-spoken, humble young men. It gives me hope for the future of society.”
Despite the plaudits, the three teenagers insist they were just “taught to always serve people regardless of what was going on.” They claimed that acting on instinct was what they did and that they did what they thought was correct.
