Although they save or help save thousands, millions of lives, no one mentions nurses, their importance is ignored. However, Caitlin Brassington decided to write a letter after meeting a former high school classmate who was very disappointed when she told her she was “just a nurse.”
Her letter went viral because it expresses a great truth:
,, I was coming home after the difficult day and, although I was still dressed in uniform, I decided to go to a supermarket and do some shopping. A former high school classmate stopped me and said,
“I didn’t know you were just a nurse.”
In the 18 years of my career I have heard this phrase many times, but today I was upset. Am I JUST a nurse?
I helped give birth to many children, but I’m just a nurse.
I held the hands of dying people as they took their last breaths, but I’m just a nurse.
I held parents in my arms after seeing their children die, but I’m just a nurse.
I resurrected patients who died for a few seconds and helped them come back to life, but I’m just a nurse.
I will miss Christmas Days, my children’s birthdays, their school holidays to come to work to take care of your loved ones, but I’m just a nurse.
I can take blood, take care of a wound, but I’m just a nurse. I can resurrect a newborn, a child, or an adult, but I’m just a nurse.
I have the experience and knowledge to save lives.
Even if I’m just a nurse, I can say I’m proud of it. “
