On the day I turned 12, my son texted me. He simply said: I’m gay “, this is how his mother starts the story that went viral. If some parents were shocked to receive such news, the woman had a very natural reaction, responding with another simple message: “OK, my dear. I love you”. Joleen Crosta, a photographer from the American state of Georgia, told her story through the Facebook page, Love What Matters.
“My sweet and sociable little boy told me the truth on the day he turned 12 years old. But we always knew. Even at such a young age, I noticed the little things he did and the way he played. Our boy was always more feminine in gestures and sometimes the children laughed at him. But he was always strong and did not let their words upset him. I was so proud of the young man he was becoming.
The children at school began to notice that he was different and teased him terribly. They were saying all sorts of ugly words to him. I never imagined that these children could be so bad with such a sweet boy, my boy.
I couldn’t believe what he was saying. So he is more feminine. And what? He has more girlfriends than friends, so what? That doesn’t mean he’s gay, I thought. Deep down, I always knew my son was gay, but I didn’t think he knew what that meant.
Now, after years, my child felt that he could tell me. A message in two simple words: I’m gay. I answered him with two equally simple words: I love you. We went to talk to him, but when he saw me he started to cry. Me too. I was so proud of him. He knew who he was and had the courage to say it.
We hugged and told him I loved them and I would support him. Soon his father came and another long hug followed. I always knew, but for me it was a great joy to see that my boy feels relieved, to see that he feels safe next to us, that he feels loved as he is. I know that a long road awaits us, that it will not be just happy moments. But I want my boy to know that he is not alone, that I will support him no matter what. ”
