After a car accident, a family buries their dog, but the next day, their dog appears at their door.

Tragedies do happen to pets, and it’s even more difficult when there are youngsters involved who need to hear the dreadful news. Dad Glenn Maloney had just witnessed an automobile accident involving the family dog Mugsy, and he was certain the four-footer had died as a result of the collision.

He needed to tell the kids that Mugsy, a devoted 4-year-old Jack Russell terrier, had passed away, which he knew would be a difficult task to have.

Mugsy was hit by a car outside of lover Viola Tiszl’s house at 3 p.m.

The father told PEOPLE, “I lifted Mugsy up, but he died in my arms.”

It seems like all hope had been lost. While Glenn was checking on Megan and Kevin, the dog was hit by a car. He instructed them to stay inside the house after hearing the hit because they didn’t need to see this dreadful occurrence up close.

Glenn hurried over to check on the puppy right away, but the man said he wasn’t breathing and that there was no heartbeat. He decided to bury the dog and keep the news from the kids for a while.

“I was in a lot of pain. So I quickly buried him and didn’t even inform the kids,” Maloney told Oprah. “I didn’t have the courage to inform the kids until around 7:00 p.m. that night.” Mugsy was no longer alive.”

When it came time to tell the kids, they decided to arrange a goodbye ceremony in the backyard.

Megan wanted to erect a cross at his grave, and her father assured her that they could do so the next morning. The family returned home, sad, after saying their prayers and saying their goodbyes.

However, when they heard noises around 5:30 a.m. the next day, they were absolutely taken aback.

It was a scratching noise coming from the front door. Maloney decided to investigate.

Mugsy leaped into his arms as soon as he opened the door!

He remembers his little tail wagging at 90 mph.

The family couldn’t comprehend what had just occurred and thought the entire situation was terrifying. Glenn’s girlfriend assumed he must’ve buried another dog that looked exactly like Mugsy, but he informed her that he was certain it was his thanks to the dog tags.

The man then proceeded to dig up the grave to see if it was still there — it had been dug up.

“Mugsy’s eyes were bloodshot and he was coated in filth,” Viola recalled. “Jack Russells are bred to follow foxes into burrows. I think he just believed it was another old hole when he woke up in it, and he dug his way out, not realizing it was intended to be his grave.”

Mugsy must’ve pulled himself out of his tomb as soon as he awoke, the vets reasoned. He was probably comatose for a time, which is why his heartbeat was faint and his owner assumed he wasn’t breathing.

“The vet stated that he dug his way out possibly after six hours,” Viola told Oprah. “His heart rate and everything else was so slow that he didn’t appear to be alive. He didn’t have any vital signs.”

A genuinely incredible story, but one that fortunately came to a happy conclusion.
