Animal enthusiasts from over the country followed the story of Ethan, a dog who was abandoned in bad shape at the Kentucky Humane Society earlier this year. Despite the odds being stacked against him, Ethan prevailed and received a happy ending.
It was a lovely reminder of the crucial work that animal rescues perform in giving neglected animals a second opportunity — but tragically, it’s a never-ending task.
A sadly similar scenario has arrived at the KHS’ doorstep months after Ethan left the shelter: a severely neglected dog in desperate need of treatment.

The Kentucky Humane Society’s staff discovered a cardboard box tied up outside their building on September 17 with the words “FOUND HELP ME” scribbled on it.
When they opened the parcel, they saw an “emaciated and miserable-looking” puppy, which brought them to tears.
The puppy had definitely had a difficult existence, as his skin was inflamed and diseased, and he was missing much of his fur.
The Kentucky Humane Society said, “He was so frail from demodectic mange and starvation that he could not even stand on his own.”
His infections were treated and his discomfort was managed by the KHS.
They discovered other difficulties while treating the sick puppy. The puppy’s immune system had been harmed by the untreated infections, and his growth appeared to have been stunted by malnutrition: “He is quite fragile and barely weighs 15 pounds when he should weigh at least 25 pounds,” the KHS stated.
They noted on their surveillance video that they spotted a man “fleeing the area,” but no one has been identified.
As supporters donated to aid the dog, the KHS requested name choices. They named him Liam after a devotee told them it meant “strong-willed” in Irish.
The Humane Society, on the other hand, warned Liam that he had a long road ahead of him.
Liam tested positive for parvovirus, a dangerous disease that affects dogs that Liam contracted before arriving at KHS, according to a KHS statement this morning.
Parvo can cause a variety of significant medical problems, including intestinal damage and septicemia, and the chances are presently stacked against Liam because he already has a low immune system.
“We’re not sure if he’ll be able to pull it off. Please remember Liam in your prayers and thoughts.”
Despite the fact that Liam faces a difficult road ahead, he is in excellent hands, and the Kentucky Humane Society is doing all possible to preserve his life.
While things may appear hopeless, it’s crucial to realize that miracles do happen. Ethan was also discovered in bad shape, with only a 50/50 chance of life, according to the KHS at the time.
Ethan survived, became a national star, and was adopted into a forever family.
