Unquestionably, Tina Turner is a legend of music. The best-selling diva has had a unique career that has spanned more than five decades, from her early success in the 1960s to her climb to solo superstardom in the ’80s. However, the ailing star has had persistent health issues in recent years that have kept her out of the public eye. In 2022, where is Tina Turner now? Here is a current account of the rock icon’s life.
Tina Turner was born on November 26, 1939, in Brownsville, Tennessee, making her 83 years old in 2022. After being together for more than 25 years, she married German music executive Erwin Bach in 2013 and the two presently reside in Switzerland.
The pair has resided in Switzerland since the 1990s, but Turner only obtained Swiss citizenship in 2013 after giving up her American citizenship.
In a 2013 interview with the German daily Blick, the “Private Dancer” singer said, “I am extremely pleased in Switzerland and I feel at home here. I cannot unable to think of a finer place to live.
After starting her 11th performance tour, fittingly titled Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour, in 2009, the legendary performer made the decision that she was prepared to leave the stage. In a 2019 interview with the New York Times, Turner explained his choice as “I was just tired of singing and making everyone happy.” I had only ever done that in my life.
The rock superstar, though, didn’t totally vanish. She contributed to the creation of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical in 2016, which had its debut in the UK in 2018 and on Broadway in 2019. Adrienne Warren won the Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical Tony Award for the critically praised production that received 12 Tony Award nominations overall.
In 2020, she also worked on a remix of “What Love Got to Do With It” with Kygo. In a statement regarding the album, Kygo said, “I couldn’t be more delighted to collaborate with Tina Turner, who is an icon that I grew up listening to. One of my all-time favorite songs is “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” thus getting the chance to remake it has been a very important milestone in my career.
The eight-time Grammy Award winner has racked up other significant honors since her retirement, including a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once in 1991 for her work as one half of the duo Ike and Tina Turner and again in 2021 for her incredible solo career. She was also inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2019.
Unfortunately, despite her elderly age, the megastar has not been immune to health issues. Turner experienced serious kidney impairment and was put on dialysis in the middle of the 2010s, in addition to having a stroke and being identified as having intestine cancer.
The singer wrote in her autobiography, My Love Story, that by 2016, her kidneys were only functioning at 20%, and she was on the verge of death. Erwin Bach, her husband, was ultimately responsible for saving her.
We were happy and he would do anything to keep us together, she said. “He stated he didn’t want another woman, or another life.” Turner received Bach’s kidney donation, and both underwent successful procedures in 2017. The thankful singer said, “His willingness to give me his kidney was a gift of love, and he remained unflappable and serene.
Turner acknowledged that she will have health problems for the rest of her life, though. She wrote, “I know that my medical adventure is far from over. “It seems like there are always more tests, doctor’s appointments, or biopsies to complete after a transplant. I’m still here, though. There is reason to celebrate because we are both still alive and closer than we could have ever imagined.
